For many, Federal Minister of Health Karl Lauterbach is something like their own bad pandemic conscience. The SPD politician and qualified epidemiologist annoys some people with his warnings to be careful when dealing with the corona virus – but in the past he was mostly right with his gloomy forecasts. Presumably this helped him to become a minister.
Now it can be considered commendable when a health minister spends his nights reading scientific studies that are otherwise only evaluated by researchers and technical officers in ministries.
However, it would be criminal if the top health politician lost sight of the future viability of our health system. Because measured against the challenges facing health policy in Germany, the pandemic is certainly not the biggest problem.
