Berlin Federal Economics Minister Robert Habeck (Greens) is planning far-reaching measures to make the German economy less dependent on raw materials from abroad. Among other things, Habeck wants to introduce stress tests and reporting requirements for companies, set recycling management quotas and set up a new fund for financial aid. This emerges from a confidential key issues paper from the Federal Ministry of Economics on the raw materials strategy, which is available to the Handelsblatt.

The SPD, Greens and FDP had already announced such a strategy in the coalition agreement. However, due to the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine, the dependencies of the German economy on individual countries are now being put to the test.

When it comes to raw materials, the worrying focus is primarily on China. A large part of the rare earths that Germany urgently needs for the energy and mobility transition are mined there.
