Berlin Federal Minister of Economics Robert Habeck (Greens) is considering a new climate tax on new car registrations. This emerges from a strategy paper by the Federal Ministry of Economics, excerpts of which are available to the Handelsblatt.

For example, “a CO2-dependent climate tax for new car registrations in combination with a continuation of the e-car premium” makes sense, so that “as a result, e-cars are cheaper than the respective combustion cars,” says the paper.

The electric car models ID.3 and ID.4 from Volkswagen are cited as examples, which should be cheaper than the Golf. In addition, Habeck is considering “an increase in company car taxation for fossil fuel burners” by “taxing the pecuniary benefit for pure burners,” the paper continues.

Employees who drive a company car usually have to pay tax on one percent of the purchase price as a so-called non-cash benefit if they are also allowed to use the car privately. The Economics Minister could start at this point.
