Habeck improves on energy price brakes: focus on repayments

Berlin After the energy price brakes for large-scale consumers from industry started in January, they will also apply to medium-sized companies and private households from Wednesday. However, the legal foundations, which were frantically implemented last autumn, still have a few weaknesses. Federal Minister of Economics Robert Habeck (Greens) wants to fix this now.

On Tuesday, his ministry initiated departmental coordination for a repair law for the gas and electricity price brake. The Handelsblatt learned this from ministry circles. “The amendment includes, among other things, the results of talks that the ministry held with energy suppliers, companies and associations,” it says.

The most important building block is the implementation of repayments if companies receive too much money as a result of the energy price brakes. This can happen due to the conditions that the EU Commission has imposed on Germany for the price brakes. These include requirements such as that companies may only be relieved up to a certain limit depending on the industry or that their profits must fall.
