Munich, Berlin, Düsseldorf Refuel without a guilty conscience. The oil company Shell has recently been promising its customers that. Anyone who uses the company’s gas pump can buy a green conscience for a small amount and offset the carbon footprint – that’s the message. Shell suggests that the carbon dioxide that burners blow into the atmosphere can be offset inexpensively and conveniently by protecting forests or planting trees.
But from the point of view of law professor Clemens Kaupa and nine of his students from the University of Amsterdam, this calculation does not work out. They filed a 95-page complaint against the billionaire company before the Dutch Advertising Commission. A few weeks ago they got right. The sentence “make a difference, drive CO2-neutral” is misleading, judged the authority.
