Great campaign: Volland donates two soccer fields of seed | Sports

At last year’s European Championships he was still on the pitch for Germany, but Kevin Volland (30) was not nominated for the World Cup.

But this action is world champion: The Monaco striker, in cooperation with the aid organization World Vision, is donating seeds for an area the size of two football pitches (approx. 14,000 square meters) in Bangladesh in South Asia. With this, Volland wants to counteract the local food insecurity.

Volland: “Inflation and the energy crisis are major challenges in Europe at the moment. And also in Africa and parts of Asia we are talking about an unbelievable extent of the emergency. The problems in basic services are extreme.”

The donation is part of the “Das Gute Gift” donation program and, in addition to high-quality seeds for growing various foods, also contains practical helpers such as hoes and spades for preparation and processing.

Volland: “Because of my childhood in the Allgäu, I know how vital agriculture is. Luckily we didn’t lack anything. However, people in poorer countries lose at least part of their harvests, for example due to droughts and floods. I am happy that together with World Vision I can change the situation.”

In Bangladesh, the most densely populated country in the world, almost 42 percent of the population live below the poverty line. The increasing number of natural disasters caused by climate change pose a major threat to infrastructure and crops. Deforestation and soil erosion are also destroying agricultural land.

The country, in which almost 38 percent of the workforce is employed in agriculture, is therefore dependent on help from abroad for food production. According to the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, only just under 58 percent have access to a safely operated drinking water supply.”
