London Boris Johnson has been doing everything he can to play a role in the Ukraine war. The British prime minister constantly receives allied heads of government for crisis meetings, and he calls Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky almost every day. When it comes to new sanctions against Russia, he is always at the forefront, most recently with the US oil boycott.
But its crisis diplomacy has a blind spot: the kingdom paints a bad picture when it comes to dealing with war refugees. While the rest of Europe welcomes Ukrainians with open arms, Britain looks like a fortress.
It is the only country in Europe that still requires visas for refugees. And only Ukrainians who already have family in Great Britain are allowed to enter the country. The authorities are completely overwhelmed when it comes to issuing visas. The result is chaos, self-inflicted and, in the eyes of many Britons, inexcusable.
