Berlin The federal government wants to fundamentally reform immigration law in Germany. In addition to easier immigration for skilled workers, improvements for tolerated refugees and for foreigners who have been living in Germany for a long time and would like to be naturalized are also planned.

However, the traffic light also wants to ensure that immigrants who no longer have the right to stay return to their home country more quickly. Parts of the planned reform are viewed very critically by the Union as the largest opposition faction, but there are also occasional contradictions in the governing parties. An overview:

What is planned?

The federal government had already launched its first migration package with the cabinet decision at the beginning of July. The key point is the new “opportunity right of residence”, which migrants who have been living in Germany as tolerated persons for at least five years as of October 31, 2022 can acquire.
