Google Translate, which impressed everyone when it was first launched in 2006, continues to surpass itself with the development of artificial intelligence models. The platform, which initially served only a few languages, will host 110 more different languages with the announcement made today.
Google Translate is rapidly increasing the number of language support
In its statement today, Google announced that it has added a total of 110 new languages to the Google Translate framework, using the capabilities of the advanced artificial intelligence model PaLM 2 AI. These languages include languages that you may not have heard of before, such as Afar, Cantonese, Manx, Nko, Punjabi, Tamazight and Tok Pisin.
Stating that the newly added languages represent more than 614 million speakers in total, the company stated that roughly 8 percent of the world’s population speaks them. However, among the added languages, there are languages with 100 million active speakers, and there are even languages that do not have a single active speaker in the world today.
Google Translate’s support for 110 languages means new opportunities for millions of people around the world. People will now be able to explore different cultures more easily, access information faster and communicate more easily with people in different languages. This development means that language barriers, which began to gradually collapse in the early 2000s, will be completely eliminated by artificial intelligence models.
Isaac Caswell, who works as a software engineer at Google, stated in his statement on the subject that the company’s approach is to prioritize the most widely used varieties of each language. According to Caswell, Google Translate manages to produce text that is closest to Southern Vlax Romani, a widely used dialect, but also contains elements from languages such as Northern Vlax and Balkan Romani. In this way, the application is prevented from making automatic translation.
