Given the high electricity prices, is an electric car still worth it?

Dusseldorf According to the will of the federal government, 15 million electric cars are to roll on German roads by 2030. Right now it’s not even a million. The ambitious goal will be difficult to achieve – especially since the general conditions have deteriorated.

There is less money from the state: instead of an environmental bonus of 9,000 euros as in the previous year, only up to 6,750 euros will be available in 2023, from next year the limit will be 3,000 euros. At the same time, energy costs have risen. Although the price of electricity has fallen again in recent weeks, it is still 50 percent more expensive than in 2021.

Is it still worth buying an electric car under these conditions? Handelsblatt editor Michael Scheppe discusses this question with consultant Heiko Seitz, who heads the electric mobility business at strategy consultancy PwC.

In addition, the current episode of Handelsblatt Green & Energy is about whether electric vehicles are really more sustainable than vehicles with combustion engines or diesel engines. The Austrian mobility and environmental expert Gerfried Jungmeier provides the answers.
