Dusseldorf Strange terms are used in the new coalition agreement on the subject of network expansion: there is talk of “hybrid interconnectors”, of “meshed offshore networks” and of “multi-terminal connections”. When asked what these expressions have to do with the energy transition, even one or the other scientist has to agree.
But concepts like these are fundamental to Germany’s fight against climate change and the transition to renewable energy. How much has to happen online becomes clear when looking at the costs that Germany is taking on.
The Federal Network Agency anticipates spending around 70 billion euros by 2035 and another 50 billion by 2040 for the expansion of the major German electricity highways. In addition, up to 45 billion euros will be added by 2030 to equip the smaller distribution network for the energy transition.
