Germany should follow Italy’s 3G obligation

Rome Traveling by train is fun again. Sure, you still need the mask. But since 3G is mandatory on Italian long-distance trains, I also feel safer again when traveling on business. What was marked as too complicated in Germany is pretty simple here: The conductor not only checks the ticket, but also proof of vaccination, recovery or corona test.

But Italy goes much further: Since this Friday, 3G has been mandatory in the entire world of work. Every employee, every civil servant, even babysitters need proof of their job. Those who do not have a “Green Pass” will be suspended from work without a salary.

That sounds drastic, but it is spot on. This is the only way to make offices and factories safe again. This is the only way we can return to normal. Germany should take this as an example.

Opponents of 3G or 2G compulsory stress repeatedly that the vaccination rate is already very high and the death rate of the virus has fallen sharply. I find both arguments wrong. Because of the delta variant, virologists hardly expect herd immunity anymore.

Either I’ll vaccinate – or I’ll get infected sooner or later. And every death, but also every patient who ends up in the intensive care unit due to Corona or later suffers from the long-term consequences of the infection (Long Covid), is one too many.

A tingling nose in the service of the general public

I am an absolute fan of vaccinations and have taken every spade with me. Still, I tolerate when someone disagrees. What I don’t understand: the refusal to be tested. A test cannot be discriminatory or anti-social if it enables you to work carefree, to stand in the coffee kitchen with colleagues and perhaps soon to take off your masks in team meetings. On the contrary: it is a brief tingling sensation in the nose in the service of the general public.

Before I was vaccinated, I was afraid for my own health. Now I am mainly concerned about the children who cannot yet be vaccinated. The youngest and most vulnerable in our society have to endure spit and lollipop tests every week. Then why shouldn’t the 3G obligation be imposed on adults – also in order to protect the children?

The example of Italy also shows that 3G not only increases the vaccination rate. It also brings with it new freedoms, stimulates the economy and relieves troubled companies. As of this week, cinemas and theaters can be fully used again. And even discos – in permanent lockdown since March 2020 – are opening again.
