The Bundeswehr would probably also have to give up Leopard 2 from its own stock in order to ensure a helpful delivery to the Ukraine.

Berlin The German government is preparing to deliver Leopard 2 main battle tanks to Ukraine. The Handelsblatt learned from circles familiar with the idea that Germany was in discussion as to how Germany could participate in a planned alliance of European Leopard users.

The debate was triggered by Poland, Finland and Spain, who want to hand over the tank from their own stocks to Kyiv. Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskiy had repeatedly asked for battle tanks to be able to defend himself against the Russian attack.

The Leopard 2 is considered the strongest main battle tank in the world, so far over 3500 units have been manufactured. Although the system dates back to the 1970s, the vehicle has been technically upgraded over the years.

The Ukrainian armed forces would gain significant combat capability if Western backers deliver the device. Germany plays the key role here, since the federal government has to approve every single export.
