German economy less innovative than in other EU countries

Berlin In 2021, the German economy increased its spending on research and development (R&D) sharply – but still fell behind in a continental comparison. This is shown by the latest comparative data from the European statistical agency Eurostat, which evaluated the Handelsblatt.

According to this, business spending on R&D in Finland in 2021 was almost 17 percent above the pre-pandemic level. Companies in Sweden increased these investments by almost 12 percent during the two years of the pandemic, and those in Spain by around 11 percent. The average of the 27 EU countries was a good four percent compared to the year before Corona.
