Dusseldorf The past two years have been shaped by the pandemic and its consequences. Now the war in Ukraine is dominating the news and the struggle for a new world order is dominating the debates. Will the war and the associated concerns about the strength of the economy also affect the publications?

The successor to one of the most renowned German economists is being sought. Last year, Princeton Professor Markus K. Brunnermeiner won the German Business Book Prize for his outstanding corona analysis “The Resilient Society”, published by Aufbau-Verlag. Now the call for entries for the best business book 2022 has started.

During the lockdown, Germans read more again. Many used the time that had been gained by no longer commuting to work and restricted activities for reading. Now it is important not to lose this momentum.

Book publishers have had a tough few years. They were hit by months of closures, canceled book fairs and literary festivals. The Leipzig Book Fair had to be canceled again this year. In Frankfurt, however, there should be a reunion, even if not to the full extent. The Frankfurt Book Fair is therefore planning to further expand its digital offerings. Juergen Boos, Managing Director of the Book Fair, expects visitor numbers to be around 70 percent of the pre-Corona level.

The Handelsblatt will be there and, together with the co-initiators Frankfurt Book Fair and Goldman Sachs, will award the German Business Book Prize – for the 16th time. “After two award ceremonies under Corona conditions, we hope to be able to properly celebrate the books again this time,” says the chairman of the jury, Hans-Jürgen Jakobs, senior editor of the Handelsblatt. “There are enough pressing issues.”

Two years ago, the award ceremony had to be canceled entirely, last year there was a gala under corona-related restrictions. Now the readers’ prize will make the evening even more exciting because, as Jakobs explains the procedure: “The winner of this award will not be announced until the evening. The award winner will not suspect anything either.”
