New York, Munich, Düsseldorf In the past decade, the automotive industry has had to order more than 100 million vehicles to the workshops because of potentially life-threatening airbag systems from the supplier Takata. It was the biggest recall ever and continues to this day. Now the disaster could even spread.
The reason: The US traffic authority NHTSA recently launched a new investigation. It checks whether there are still millions of cars with faulty airbags on the road. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s technical analysis includes an estimated 30 million vehicles in the United States from years 2001 through 2019.
The investigation affected models from Toyota, Ford, General Motors, Honda, Nissan and Ferrari, among others. Makes from three German manufacturers are also tested. Specifically, the NHTSA has already contacted Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Porsche, as the companies confirm at the request of the Handelsblatt.
