EU supports Serbia in energy supply

The European Union (EU) is supporting the Balkan country of Serbia in overcoming the energy crisis with aid totaling 165 million euros. An agreement to this effect was signed on Tuesday by Serbian Minister for European Integration Tanja Miscevic and Deputy Head of the EU Delegation to Serbia Plamena Halacheva, state television RTS reported.

The funds are intended to protect households and small and medium-sized businesses from the effects of increased energy prices. Measures are also to be promoted that help consumers to save energy. Although Serbia has very good relations with Moscow, energy prices there have also risen since the start of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine.

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic also attended the signing of the financing agreement in Belgrade. “Serbia is heavily dependent on the EU and will not make much progress without it,” he wrote on Instagram afterwards. The Balkan country has been negotiating EU accession since 2014. It has verbally condemned Russia’s war against Ukraine, but has not yet endorsed EU sanctions against Moscow.
