Gas crisis: Economic institutes cautiously give the all-clear

Berlin Russia is making cuts again: As of Wednesday, the state-owned company Gazprom will only be sending 20 percent of its full capacity via the Nord Stream 1 Baltic Sea pipeline. In return, concerns are growing as to whether there will be enough gas for the winter.

A cautious all-clear is now coming from the four leading German economic institutes. They calculated what would happen if Russian gas supplies remained at 20 percent permanently. The result of IWH Halle, RWI Essen, IfW Kiel and Ifo Munich: In the most likely case, there will be no gas shortage in winter.

“If our assumptions come true, there would be enough gas both this winter and next,” said IWH economist Christoph Schult, who carried out the calculations. The results are exclusively available to the Handelsblatt.
