Dusseldorf The department store chain Galeria is resorting to radical measures in its fight against the retail crisis. As the company confirmed to the Handelsblatt on Friday, the management has unilaterally terminated the collective restructuring agreement concluded with the Verdi union.

“In this economically tense situation, we are forced, as expressly provided for in such a case in the collective agreement, to terminate our integration collective agreement with the Verdi union in order to stabilize our company as a whole in the long term,” Galeria said when asked.

That doesn’t mean that Galeria is no longer bound by collective bargaining agreements. “The consequence of this termination is, on the one hand, the “freezing” of remuneration at the current wage level and, on the other hand, the obligation to negotiate with Verdi in order to adapt the collective bargaining path to the new situation,” it said.
