Professor Faustin Archange Touadéra, President of the Central African Republic, announced the launch of a national memecoin, sparking skepticism about the video’s authenticity. Critics raised concerns over the unusual timing, language, and potential AI manipulation. The presidency confirmed the video’s legitimacy, stating it was aimed at a global audience. Despite ambitions for cryptocurrency leadership in Africa, public apprehension persists due to hacking incidents and identity theft. The choice of the Solana blockchain has also drawn criticism, raising doubts about the project’s viability.
Introduction of the Central African Republic’s Memecoin
Greetings, esteemed friends from across the globe! I am Professor Faustin Archange Touadéra, the President of the Central African Republic. Recently, I made a groundbreaking announcement on my official X account: the launch of our nation’s very own memecoin. This video has garnered over a million views, but it has also raised numerous eyebrows regarding the authenticity of my account and the announcement itself.
Concerns Over Account Security and Video Authenticity
The release of the video has prompted a wave of skepticism, with many speculating that my account may have been compromised. Critics highlighted several anomalies, such as the video being in English rather than the usual French, and its peculiar timing just after midnight on a Sunday. Some even suggested that the video could be a product of artificial intelligence manipulation. Notably, a cryptocurrency-focused website has labeled the video as a ‘deepfake,’ asserting that it mimics my voice to convey a false message. Compounding the confusion, a dedicated X account for Central African cryptocurrency news was suspended shortly after the announcement.
However, the Central African presidency has confirmed the video’s authenticity, asserting that it was recorded in French and translated by a compatriot in Paris. The operation was managed from Dubai and was intentionally delivered in English to engage a global audience. Spokesperson Albert Yaloké Mokpeme acknowledged public skepticism, stating, “We want to reach the whole world with this operation.” He emphasized that the timing was strategic, considering different time zones.
The Ambitious Vision for Cryptocurrency in the Central African Republic
Following the initial announcement, the presidency shared another video on Facebook, reiterating that the memecoin is already a ‘resounding success.’ The Central African Republic aims to be at the forefront of cryptocurrency adoption in Africa. In April 2022, we became the second nation globally, after El Salvador, to recognize bitcoin as legal tender alongside the CFA franc. Despite previous setbacks with our Sango initiative, which faced legal challenges, we are committed to exploring the potential of cryptocurrency.
Yet, the launch has not been met with universal acclaim. Journalist Romaric Saint-Aubert notes that public apprehension is common when authorities announce new cryptocurrencies, especially given the surge in hacked accounts misleading investors with fake tokens. The recent hacking of Kylian Mbappé’s account is a stark reminder of this issue. In addition, numerous spam and phishing attempts have plagued discussions surrounding our cryptocurrency.
Interactions on social media also reveal instances of identity theft, with fake accounts impersonating notable figures like Félix Tshisekedi, the President of the Democratic Republic of Congo. These accounts have attempted to redirect users to other cryptocurrency ventures, raising further concerns about the integrity of our launch.
Critics suggest that the choice of Solana, a blockchain often associated with speculative memecoins, is another red flag. This platform is popular for its low transaction fees, making it appealing for both legitimate projects and scammers alike. The rapid decline in the token’s value—losing 90% shortly after launch—has left experts questioning its viability. Saint-Aubert describes the launch as potentially a marketing stunt, drawing parallels to Donald Trump’s similar announcement.
