While Scholz generally warned of increasing protectionism, Lindner launched the idea of ​​a large free trade zone among all democratic states.

Since the World Trade Organization WTO is not fully capable of acting, Germany and Europe should strengthen their trade cooperation with “like-minded partners”, the FDP chairman told the Handelsblatt: “I therefore propose a free trade zone for democracies.”

Last year, Lindner suggested a resumption of the free trade talks with the USA, which have been suspended since the failure of the negotiations on the transatlantic free trade agreement TTIP. But American interest was low.
