France is putting Germany under pressure

Paris, Brussels The letter that Paris sent to the European partners before the EU meeting of economic and finance ministers on Monday and Tuesday can be understood as a robust suggestion for the German coalition negotiations: It is about the rising gas and electricity prices, how to deal with them nuclear power, the dependence on Russia and the energy sovereignty of the European Union.

France does not mention Germany directly. But the demands of the Minister of Economic Affairs Bruno Le Maire and Minister of the Environment Barbara Pompili for a “in-depth analysis” of the common EU energy market are a clear message to the future federal government.

Paris fears that expensive energy supplies will not be a passing phenomenon. This is therefore due to the growing dependence on gas-fired power plants and the rising CO2 prices for fossil fuels in the fight against climate change.
