Foundations warn against dominance in standardization

Brussels Germany and the EU should reward more when companies get involved in international standardization. That is the recommendation of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation and the Diplo Foundation. The two organizations have jointly analyzed the role that China plays in international standardization organizations.

In recent years so many of the important standardization secretariats have been filled with Chinese that there are now concerns that China could change the way the bodies work.

Whether this is really China’s goal remains open in the 100-page, as yet unpublished analysis of the two foundations. However, a clear need for action is described there. Western governments should encourage companies to get involved in standardization. One of the ways in which this could be done is by governments bearing the cost of this engagement.
