Football World Cup in Qatar 2022: Liveblog for the group stage

That brings the day at the World Cup

With victories, England and the Netherlands want to move into the knockout stages of the World Cup in Qatar. A politically explosive encounter is also on the agenda between the USA and Iran.

Netherlands – Qatar (4 p.m. / ARD and MagentaTV)

A win and thus first place in the group are firmly planned for the Dutch. Against outsiders Qatar, who no longer have a chance of reaching the knockout stages, the focus is on getting their own offensive going. In the 1-1 draw with Ecuador, Bonds coach Louis van Gaal’s team only managed one shot on goal, which is simply unacceptable for an Elftal. For Asian champions Qatar, it’s all about not being the first World Cup hosts in history to be eliminated without a point.

Ecuador – Senegal (4 p.m. / MagentaTV)

Group A is still about progress for both teams. Ecuador’s goalscorer Énner Valencia is slightly injured but can play. If he scores the next goal for Ecuador, it would be a World Cup record for his country with seven World Cup goals in a row. African champions Senegal need a win to reach the round of 16 at a World Cup for the second time since 2002. The performance in the 3-1 win over Qatar gave me courage.

Iran – USA (8 p.m. / ARD and MagentaTV)

A game for the Iranians could hardly be more explosive, sportingly and politically. The USA are considered the Great Satan in the Islamic Republic’s doctrine, a defeat in Group B would be more than just a failure on the pitch. The game could also become historical in terms of sport. A win would certainly see Iran qualify for the knockout stage for the first time. After two draws against Wales (1-1) and England (0-0), the Americans need a win to reach the round of 16.

Wales – England (8 p.m. / MagentaTV)

Coach Gareth Southgate’s English are not through yet, but they can hardly be ousted from one of the two top places. With a victory in the British duel, the Three Lions would secure the group victory. Perennial Jude Bellingham could get a break. After a 1-1 draw against the USA and a 2-0 loss to Iran, Wales and star striker Gareth Bale are in poor shape going into the final group game. The Welsh definitely need to win to have a chance.
