Fled from Putin’s Russia in the direction of Berlin – Crossing the border by bike

They flee because they see no future in their home country. Hundreds of thousands of Russians – many of them IT specialists, artists and political activists – have fled their country since the war of aggression began. Exactly how many is difficult to say. Russian citizens can enter countries like Georgia and Kazakhstan without a visa. Some returned over time. Others emigrated permanently.

To enter Germany, however, people with Russian citizenship need a visa, a residence permit or they can apply for asylum. Last year, Russia was one of the ten countries from which the most asylum applications for Germany 2022 came. Specifically, there are 3,862 applications from Russian citizens, according to data from the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees.
