Berlin Olaf Scholz gives far more interviews than Angela Merkel, conducts citizen dialogues, travels the country and gives press conferences almost every day. He is trying to master this multiple crisis triggered by Russia’s war. But why is trust in him and his government collapsing so quickly?

“Politically, he doesn’t do that much wrong,” even critics of Olaf Scholz emphasize. Because the situation is new for everyone. Much has been said and written about the SPD Chancellor’s communication problems. Why doesn’t he get through with many things? A search for clues – based on discussions with the Chancellery, communication professionals and influential social democrats.

1. No Merkel system

“The technique of power in the Angela Merkel system was pretty ingenious,” says former deputy government spokesman Christoph Steegmans. Mainly thanks to the trio of office manager Beate Baumann, who eliminated all pitfalls from interviews, Merkel’s media advisor Eva Christiansen and government spokesman Steffen Seibert.
