Berlin In the winter that was coming to an end, Germany was spared gas shutdowns. But the Federal Network Agency does not want to give a general all-clear. Federal Network Agency President Klaus Müller repeatedly warns that the winter of 2023/2024 will also pose a challenge because the lack of natural gas from Russia cannot easily be replaced. Filling the gas storage tanks in the coming months will not be an easy task.

The Federal Network Agency is therefore preparing for future gas shortages. She had the consulting company Prognos examine 78 production areas in order to have a decision-making basis for shutdowns in the event of future gas shortages.

But who will be affected? Who has to reckon with the cuts in supply – and who doesn’t? The Handelsblatt first lists the 36 production areas, sectors and services that are worth protecting according to the study:

  • Services Sewage/waste
  • Services education
  • Health/social work services
  • Aviation services
  • Postal/telecommunications services
  • Shipping services
  • Land Transport/Pipeline Transport
  • Print

  • Retail (excluding vehicles)
  • power supply
  • Extraction of natural gas and oil
