Federal states have a surplus of almost 24 billion euros

Berlin In the first eight months of this year, the 16 federal states achieved a budget surplus totaling 23.6 billion euros. Compared to the previous year, the budget situation of the federal states improved by 29.6 billion euros. This emerges from a template from the Federal Ministry of Finance, which is available to the Handelsblatt. In the first eight months of 2021, the federal states had recorded a deficit of six billion euros.

The figures are likely to further fuel the dispute between the federal and state governments over the financing of the third financing package. Next Tuesday, the federal and state governments want to discuss the package at a conference of prime ministers.

The federal states have so far refused to support the federal government’s relief package in its current form. You should contribute 19 billion euros to the 65 billion euro package yourself. However, the federal states could not afford this financially, the prime ministers complain.
