Game Development Insights
MGG: What has been your biggest challenge in developing Monster Hunter Wilds?
YT: The challenge lies in our evolved ecosystem, where we have created a seamless world connecting human colonies and hunting maps. The introduction of real-time AI for both monsters and NPCs means we’re processing significantly more elements simultaneously than in any previous Monster Hunter game. In past titles, quests were contained in separate environments, but now, everything continues in real-time. Even post-quest, players can remain on the map, with monsters and NPCs dynamically moving around, which has proven to be a substantial challenge for us.
HC: The Seikret seems to change everything; how challenging has it been to design scenarios or monsters around this?
YT: With the removal of loading barriers in Monster Hunter World, the seamless transition between areas has changed our design approach. Previously, moving between zones gave players a brief respite from monsters. Now, with the ability for monsters to chase players anywhere, we’ve had to innovate. We introduced bushes for hiding, but with the Seikret, players can call their mounts in times of trouble, eliminating the need for those hiding spots and encouraging new gameplay dynamics. We’ve integrated shortcuts accessible only by the Seikret, enhancing exploration and strategy.
MGG: Is support for PS5 Pro capabilities in the works for MH Wilds?
RT: Yes, we are planning support for PS5 Pro, and we’ll share more details soon!
Game Design Inspirations and Innovations
MGG: What has inspired the design of Arkveld, the flagship monster of Wilds?
KJ: Each main monster ties into the story and possesses a sense of mystery. Arkveld, in particular, embodies the idea of a wandering warrior, featuring a design that seems to integrate weapon elements. As players progress, the monster’s connection to the game’s narrative will become clearer, enriching the overall experience.
GS: This is the first time we hear the Palicos speak with real voices. Why the change?
YT: While Palicos have always conveyed information, having them speak audibly during gameplay allows players to stay engaged with the action. Their voices can alert players to critical information without diverting attention from the hunt. This addition enhances the gameplay experience and deepens the narrative intrigue.
GS: Why does Wilds place a greater emphasis on storytelling compared to previous titles?
RT: Under the guidance of director Mr. Tokuda, we expanded the narrative to explore how humans fit into the ecosystem. While players still assume the role of a hunter, they will encounter characters in camps living everyday lives, which adds depth to the world. Players will see how monsters and the environment impact these characters, enhancing the overall narrative experience.
