Experts call for stronger transatlantic cooperation on China policy

The Vice President of the USA and the Federal Chancellor showed a united front at the Munich Security Conference – but there are differences in China policy.

Munich In a joint study on the occasion of the current Munich Security Conference (MSC), the Mercator Institute for China Studies (MERICS), the Aspen Strategy Group and the Munich Security Conference are calling for Europe and the USA to better coordinate their policies towards China. The study was published on Saturday and was available to the Handelsblatt in advance.

While there has been solid progress in transatlantic China policy, it says there are still “significant gaps” and much of the progress so far has been “rhetorical and diplomatic.” Future progress is also not guaranteed. “This is partly a question of different levels of economic engagement and different views on the balance of risks and benefits of deeper integration with China,” the authors said.

US Vice President Kamala Harris spoke at the Munich Security Conference on Saturday. The USA traveled to the Bavarian capital with a delegation of unprecedented size.
