A day after US politician Nancy Pelosi visited Taiwan, the East Asian conflict has intensified. As threatened, China began military maneuvers around the island, among other things, the People’s Republic fired several rockets on Thursday. Shells fell in the waters north, south and east of Taiwan. The last time something like this happened was in 1996.

This worries the former ambassador to China and Japan, Volker Stanzel. China is currently trying not to provoke the USA. However, head of state Xi Jinping has “chosen methods that are not particularly painful now, but offer enormous potential for escalation,” says Stanzel in an interview with the Handelsblatt.

The former top diplomat considers the crisis to be dangerous because it is difficult for all parties to assess. It was to be expected. “Nevertheless, the development is unpredictable. Everyone is now waiting to see if China will escalate. It has the instruments,” says Stanzel.
