Europe’s holiday destinations are expecting a record-breaking summer season

Paris, Istanbul, Madrid, Athens, Rome After two weak years, the tourism industry in the major European holiday countries can breathe a sigh of relief. Inflation, chaos at airports or the drought and fires in southern Europe did not stop people from travelling. The vacation regions also benefited from the fact that many citizens decided to vacation in their own country.

After the first figures for the main season, France and Greece are heading for new highs in terms of visitors and turnover, while Italy and Spain are at least getting back to the level of the previous peak year 2019.

This is a relief for the economies of the countries: In Greece, tourism contributes more than twenty percent to the gross domestic product (GDP) in good years, in Spain it was 12.4 percent before the pandemic. An overview of the Handelsblatt correspondents on a season that promises a record:
