Europe’s energy supply: Spain & Portugal want to become energy exporters

Madrid Spain and Portugal want to position themselves as energy suppliers for Northern Europe and are fully committed to green hydrogen. At the summit of the Mediterranean countries on Friday, Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, Portugal’s Prime Minister Antonio Costa and France’s President Emmanuel Macron presented details of the planned hydrogen pipeline from Barcelona to Marseille. This is intended to better connect the Iberian Peninsula to the energy grid in the rest of Europe. A new line is also to be built between Portugal and Spain.

“This will be the EU’s first hydrogen corridor,” said Sánchez in Alicante. “We are strengthening energy security and the strategic autonomy of the EU.”

The plan is to build a pipeline under the Mediterranean Sea that will start operating in 2030 and transport around two million tons of green hydrogen per year. This corresponds to around ten percent of the expected demand of the EU in 2030.
