Brussels The days when Christian Lindner liked to be an eco-fright are over. The Federal Minister of Finance has recently been raving about “liberation energies” when he talks about wind and solar power. Ursula von der Leyen also sees the promotion of green electricity as more than a contribution to climate protection.

For the head of the EU Commission, the green transformation is “a piece of geopolitics”. She says: “The faster we switch to renewable energies and hydrogen (…), the faster we can achieve true independence.”

Ever since Russia launched its campaign of conquest against Ukraine, the sustainability of the energy supply has become a security policy imperative for the EU. Europe dreams of a green energy age, ending dependence on Russian fuel. This new world is beautiful – too good to be true.
