Brussels In the future, the EU will prescribe blending quotas for sustainable fuels for aircraft. This means on the one hand e-fuels that are produced on the basis of green hydrogen, and on the other hand bio-fuels that are obtained from plant residues, animal fats and used cooking oil.

The amount of the quotas that are prescribed for the airlines was controversial until the very end. Now, from 2025, two percent of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) are to be prescribed. A distinction is not yet made between e-fuels and bio-fuels, because in all likelihood no significant quantities of e-fuels will be available in 2025. This rate is based on a negotiation document that is available to the Handelsblatt.

From 2030, the use of e-fuels will be mandatory; they must initially account for 0.7 percent of the total amount of fuel.

By 2050, the admixture quotas will increase to at least 35 percent e-fuels and a total of 70 percent sustainable aviation fuels. No further steps have been defined for later years.
