Brussels, Berlin The EU Commission is setting the course for the hydrogen world: On Tuesday, the Brussels authority presented a package of laws on the gas market. One of the plans is to prepare for the addition of hydrogen to the gas network. But what sounds like a contribution to climate protection scares environmentalists. Gas network operators are divided.

What exactly it is about can be seen in Erftstadt-Niederberg. Anyone who heats with natural gas here will soon switch to hydrogen, at least 20 percent. The local supplier GVG will bring the hydrogen to Erftstadt by truck and feed it into the network at the last distribution node in front of the village.

It is supposed to be a test with which GVG and the Rheinische Netzgesellschaft gain initial experience with the fuel. The project does not yet have any benefit for customers or the environment, as conventionally produced hydrogen pollutes the climate.
