Ethereum 2.0 “Merge” Update Activated! Why Is This Development Important?

Ethereum 2.0 consolidation is finally enabled on the interoperable Devnet. So why is this important?

The “The Merge” phase, a key transitional upgrade for Ethereum 2.0, has been activated on Devnet’s closed channel. Ben Edgington, one of the ConsenSys development studios, Ethereum developer and researcher, stated that the first smart contract platform marked a very important milestone.

PoS Ethereum is now one step closer

According to the latest tweet from Edgington, product owner of the Ethereum 2.0 Teku client application, the “The Merge” upgrade has been activated on Devnet.

The Merge update is designed to interact with different applications. Therefore, ETH2 enthusiasts are now able to use tools that can actually test the transition to Ethereum 2.0. Edgington, on the other hand, showed a “Hello” message in the image he shared with the names of important people for the Ethereum world.

Although the location of the event is kept secret, Lefterin Karapetsas, the founder of Rotki, noticed Greek writings on the water bottles in the shared images, and therefore stated that the event may have been held in Greece.

What is “The Merge”?

The Merge describes a major upgrade that replaces the proof-of-work (PoW) and token-of-stake (PoS) domains running behind the Ethereum blockchain. The Merge update is an important update that paves the way for Ethereum 2.0.

What is important is that the main stage of this event will take place in the first quarter or second quarter of 2022.
