ESV Leoben’s Stellar Performance

LEOBEN. In an exhilarating match during the third spring round of the Austrian Bundesliga East, the ESV Leoben men’s team triumphed over KSK municipal employees Wiener Neustadt. Gerhard Plank stood out as the star player, knocking down an impressive 616 pins. This victory helped ESV Leoben maintain their stronghold on second place in the men’s Bundesliga East. The next challenge awaits them on Saturday, February 8, against SKC Sonnensee Ritzing.

Highlighting Local Achievements

TROFAIACH. Dominik Maier from Trofaiach made a name for himself at the Special Olympics Winter Games in Liechtenstein, securing a silver medal in cross-country skiing. He excelled over three kilometers and also finished fourth in the one-kilometer race.

At the recent Austrian student and youth championships in Nesselwängle, the Nordic Ski Team Trofaiach showcased their talents. Maya Brandner emerged as a two-time vice-state champion in both the ‘Classic Sprint’ and ‘Individual Free Technique’ events, while her teammates also performed admirably.

Excitement filled the air during Trofaiach’s city championship in ice stock, held at Gasthaus Mossauer in Laintal. A total of 15 teams vied for the title, with the Gößbachstüberl team, led by Moar Ewald Brunner, claiming victory. The Ennstaler team and Gößgrabler team followed closely in second and third places, respectively.

EISENERZ. The FIS Youth Cup 2024/25 finals in Nordic combined saw Anna Brandner from Eisenerz leading after two days of jumps and securing two wins, solidifying her position at the top of the overall ranking.

In addition, Anna Brandner shined at the first student Austria Cup of the season in Saalfelden, achieving four victories in ski jumping and Nordic combined while breaking her hill record with a new distance of 63 meters.

Furthermore, the children’s ski course organized by local clubs set a new participation record with nearly 90 eager skiers. Over four days, advanced skiers honed their skills, while beginners found their footing in the Erzbergarena, thanks to the Nordic Training Center Eisenerz.

LEOBEN. ESV Leoben kicked off the new year with a stunning 7:1 victory against KSK Klagenfurt Magdalensberg in the Bundesliga East. Fabian Schmid led the charge with 613 pins, keeping ESV Leoben firmly in second place on the leaderboard.

Looking ahead, the second spring round is set for Saturday, January 18, at 5 PM in St. Pölten, with the next home game scheduled for Saturday, February 1, at 1 PM against 1. KSK Gem.Bed.Wiener Neustadt.

ST. PETER-FREIENSTEIN. The market championship at the ice stock facility of EV St. Peter-Freienstein drew 20 teams competing for three days. EV Gonidorf emerged victorious, followed by the Ice Smurfs and the Boys, who rounded out the podium.

EISENERZ. Mike Busse, who took up snooker at just 14, has made remarkable strides in the sport. After being discovered by Austrian state champion Florian Nüßle, he was invited to squad training in Vienna. Despite time constraints preventing his continued training, he claimed the Styrian state champion title in December 2023 and successfully defended it in December 2024, winning all his matches 3:0.

LEOBEN/GAAL. The Nature Friends ski course ran smoothly from January 2 to 5, helping nearly 50 children enhance their skiing skills in small groups. The course concluded with a thrilling final race showcasing their progress and a fun-filled Krapfen day with ‘Mickey Mouse.’ More ski courses are planned for the semester break, with further details available on the Nature Friends website.
