Growing Popularity of Solar Energy in France
The appeal of solar energy is on the rise in France, with approximately 620,000 households now utilizing solar panels—an impressive threefold increase in just two years. In the past year alone, installations have surged by 60%. A visit to one of the nation’s largest warehouses for solar energy equipment showcases this growing trend.
“This facility spans 4000 m², and we dispatch around 50 to 80 installations daily to 90 different departments,” shares Ondine Suavet, co-founder of Mylight150. As demand continues to grow, the company is set to add 80 new employees next year. Every component, from panels to screws and cables, is meticulously prepared on-site, ensuring that each solar kit is tailored to the unique needs of individual customers. “No two houses are alike, so we customize the number of hooks and screws required for each installation,” emphasizes Suavet.
Understanding Solar Panel Installation and Benefits
Our report highlights the experience of Maël, who installed 30 photovoltaic panels on his roof. After making the switch three years ago, he now meets 50% of his home’s electricity needs, significantly lowering his energy costs. “The entire setup cost me around 10,000 euros, and I did the installation myself. Today, I save approximately 1,500 euros annually, making it a profitable investment over seven years,” he explains.
However, prospective solar panel owners should consider a few important factors. First, adapting to self-consumption is crucial. “I run my washing machines when the sun is out, unlike others who prefer off-peak hours,” Maël notes. This approach is necessary since storing energy produced by solar panels can be both challenging and costly. He adds, “In January, our consumption is high, while production is low. Conversely, in July and August, we generate more energy than we use.” Fortunately, any excess energy can be sold back to energy suppliers at half the purchase price.
For Gilbert and Patricia, their investment of 15,800 euros covered the installation of ten solar panels. Thanks to advancements in installation techniques, the process has become much quicker and more reliable, requiring only a single day for setup. “Previously, we had to remove all the tiles and integrate a basin into the roof, which led to numerous leakage issues,” explains Stéphane, a technician from Rhône Solaire Pro.
While exploring solar energy, it’s also important to be cautious of potential scams. “Be wary of anyone trying to sell you an excessive number of panels. Every household has unique needs, so a thorough assessment is necessary,” warns Stéphane. It’s also advisable to avoid unrealistic promises of returns or unsolicited telemarketing offers, as these practices are prohibited.
For those concerned about the initial investment, there are still ways to engage with solar energy on a budget. Beyond individual installations, France has seen the emergence of 370 community projects including solar panels on parking lots and hospitals, allowing more citizens to participate in the energy transition. For instance, a school in the Paris region has been equipped with 363 panels, with local residents as the project’s driving force. These community members don’t consume the electricity generated; instead, it powers two-thirds of the school’s energy needs.
“Citizens can buy shares in the cooperative for just 100 euros,” explains Jean-François Queunet, president of Sud Paris Soleil. “We guarantee returns that are comparable to or slightly better than those of the Livret A.” This collaborative effort is a testament to the growing solidarity initiatives blooming across France.
