Lützerath When Daniel Bartel drives into a parking lot on the edge of the Garzweiler lignite opencast mine on this gray December day, it is almost deserted. A single SUV is parked in the driveway. Bartel is actually a company founder and consultant. Today he came as a scout.

Without paying attention to the security men in the SUV, he gets out, turns around and walks towards around 30 dixi toilets that are at the back end of the parking lot. He opens a cubicle, bends over the toilet seat and looks into the large collection container. Empty, no blue liquid. A good sign. As long as the toilets are empty, a large number of security forces is not to be expected here.
