Berlin When Elon Musk announced the first European Tesla factory in Grünheide near Berlin on November 12, 2019, there were still many pine trees in the Brandenburg sand. Now the “Gigafactory” of the American tech pioneer and Tesla boss is a reality. The first e-cars are scheduled to roll off the production line here in a few weeks.

Despite the pending building permit for the entire project, Brandenburg’s Economics Minister Jörg Steinbach (SPD) draws a predominantly positive balance. “A lot went well,” Steinbach told the Handelsblatt. The first tree on the factory premises was felled almost exactly two years ago. “This is a very presentable time for this modern factory that was built in Grünheide.”

Steinbach still wants to put the course of the approval process to the test. “We want to learn from the experience, including from possible problems in the workflow,” he said. “The Tesla settlement should be and remain a showcase project – also for other approval processes of this magnitude.”
