Electricity and gas prices will rise sharply in 2023 – market logic or deadweight effect?

Dusseldorf Many municipal utilities increase their electricity and gas prices significantly at the turn of the year. In Leipzig and Munich, the basic supply tariffs for electricity will more than double.

The price increases coincide with the introduction of the electricity and gas price brake. The instrument stipulates that the prices for consumers will be capped and that the energy suppliers will be reimbursed by the state for the difference to the actual tariff. This applies to 80 percent of monthly consumption.

On the one hand, the wholesale prices for electricity and gas have risen significantly. On the other hand, consumer advocates are already warning of deadweight effects. Kathrin Witsch, head of the Handelsblatt energy team, classifies the situation in the new episode of Handelsblatt Today.

The second topic of the show is about inheriting real estate. In an interview with Anis Micijevic, Markus Hinterberger, chief reporter in the Handelsblatt financial investment team, explains why there is a risk of higher taxes on gifts and inheritances of real estate in the coming year, and gives tips on how those affected can minimize their tax burden.
