Berlin Very few had expected this: The economists are proposing higher taxes for top earners to finance the energy crisis. The federal government could either increase the top tax rate or levy an energy soli for higher earners.

“This would help to increase the accuracy of the overall package of relief and burdens and to signal that the energy crisis must be overcome in solidarity,” write the economic experts in their new annual report, which will be presented on Wednesday and is available to the Handelsblatt.

The Council of Experts’ demand is remarkable. In the recent past, the leading German economists’ advisory body saw itself as the guardian of a liberal regulatory economy, rejected additional tax burdens and instead pushed for tax cuts.

After several personnel changes in the Council, however, the perspective has changed. Even the expert Martin Werding, supported by the employers, backed the proposal. The “Süddeutsche Zeitung” reported about it first.
