Dusseldorf With a radical change in the business model in Germany, the online platform Ebay wants to break the downward trend in sales. “From March 1st, private sales will be completely free of charge for both sellers and buyers,” announced Ebay Germany boss Oliver Klinck in an interview with the Handelsblatt.

So far, Ebay has charged private sellers a basic fee of 35 cents plus a commission of eleven percent on the total value of the transaction. For commercial traders, who account for around 80 percent of sales on the platform, the commissions for the sales remain.

With the pilot test, which could be transferred to other markets if successful, Ebay initially foregoes sales. However, the platform operator hopes that an indirect effect will have a positive impact on its business in the medium term. “We are absolutely convinced that this measure will lead to significant and sustainable growth in Germany,” says Klinck.
