new York After a temporary ban on all US domestic flights, the first planes are taking off again at the airports in Atlanta and Newark in the greater New York area. That said the US Federal Aviation Administration FAA on Twitter. The FAA is making progress in fixing a computer glitch that caused havoc in US air travel on Thursday morning.

The information system that provides pilots and crews with information about possible dangers or service changes at airports, the so-called “Notice to Air Missions System” (Notam), was affected.

Initially, the authority had instructed the airlines not to take off domestic flights until 9 a.m. local time (3 p.m. German time), as they first wanted to ensure the integrity of the flight and safety information. She later extended that deadline to 9:30 a.m. local time.

Passengers had complained about delayed flights on social media. Shortly after the FAA’s announcement, more than 3,500 flights within, to or from the United States were delayed and almost 400 were canceled, according to the website flightaware.com.

The disruption at the FAA does not affect Lufthansa flights to and from the USA, as the airline informed the German Press Agency. A spokesman for the Frankfurt airport operator Fraport said that the operational impact on flight operations in Frankfurt has so far been minor.

A White House spokeswoman said on Wednesday on twitter, so far there is no evidence of a cyber attack. President Joe Biden has instructed the Department of Transportation to conduct a full investigation into the reasons.

The information that the Notam sends to pilots and crews can be up to 200 pages long for international flights and contain bird warnings as well as information about closed runways or construction work that affects flight operations.
