Leadership instability at the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) has intensified with the dismissal of Torsten Burmester, who is campaigning for Cologne’s mayoral position. Following an extraordinary meeting, DOSB President Thomas Weikert announced the decision, citing the need to prioritize the organization’s interests. Burmester had previously been suspended due to his candidacy, and now the remaining board members are sharing his responsibilities while a search for a new chairman begins. Concerns regarding communication breakdowns and professionalism within the DOSB have emerged ahead of an upcoming general assembly.

Leadership Turmoil at DOSB: Burmester’s Dismissal

The ongoing leadership turmoil within the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) has reached a critical point. The presidency of this prominent sports organization has made the decision to terminate the chairmanship of Torsten Burmester, who is currently campaigning for the mayoral position in Cologne.

The DOSB officially announced Burmester’s dismissal in a press release issued on Tuesday, December 3, 2024. This decisive action was taken by the presidency during an extraordinary meeting held the day prior. DOSB President Thomas Weikert later communicated this decision to members via a letter.

Responsibilities Reassigned Amidst Transition

In light of this decision, Weikert emphasized the challenging nature of the choice, stating, “This decision was truly not easy for us. As a presidency, it is our duty to prioritize the interests of the association and act for the benefit of the DOSB.” The responsibilities of the chairman are now being shared among the four remaining board members, ensuring that the organization continues to function effectively. Weikert further indicated that steps would be swiftly taken to find a new chairman.

Prior to his dismissal, Burmester had been suspended following his announcement of candidacy for the upcoming Cologne mayoral election. He had expressed confidence in his ability to balance the demands of a political campaign with his role at the DOSB. However, the organization quickly indicated that a leadership change was inevitable, independent of the election results.

As Burmester aims to secure the SPD nomination for the Cologne mayoral race in autumn 2025, the DOSB is also preparing for significant personnel adjustments.

Recent events have highlighted a breakdown in communication between Burmester and Weikert, as evidenced by the leaked email from Weikert to DOSB staff. In it, he shared that after extensive discussions, the presidency had decided to suspend Burmester and was working on a resolution.

With the DOSB’s general assembly approaching on December 7 in Saarbrücken, the absence of a chairman to lead the program adds to the pressure faced by the presidency, which is already under scrutiny. Criticism has mounted regarding the professionalism of the DOSB’s processes, particularly in relation to the 2029 games bid.

As Burmester navigates his new political ambitions, he has expressed concerns about the lack of support for individuals pursuing local political roles, indirectly criticizing the DOSB’s stance. He believes that transparency and a clear separation between candidacy and office are essential as he enters the political arena in a city that aims to host Olympic events.

As the DOSB gears up for the candidate search for the 2036 or 2040 Olympic Games, potential conflicts of interest are being closely monitored, prompting the organization to take decisive action to address these pressing issues.
