Does the 2G rule do more harm than good to retail?

2G in retail

Ultimately, just like ghost games in the Bundesliga, the 2G regulation is all about signals: Come on, we’re doing something!

The trade association and many retailers have been sounding the alarm for days. A 2G regulation, i.e. the banishment of unvaccinated people from the shops, is unreasonable, destroys sales and, on top of that, is not constitutional.

It is not at all the question of whether this is reasonable. It’s much simpler: A 2G regulation for retail creates many more new problems than it creates benefits.

Because since you cannot let unvaccinated people starve to death, there will again be special regulations on which businesses are excluded from 2G. And the chaos this will create could already be seen at the lockdown last year. At Aldi and Lidl, customers jostled for the promotional baskets with sweaters and sneakers, while H&M or Deichmann had to close.

The effect: In the face of these arbitrary and difficult to understand measures, people will be even less willing to show understanding for restrictions. And the dealers, many of whom supported the vaccination campaign with their own campaigns, are once again offended without need.

The infection rate will hardly affect the 2G regulation. All the facts speak against it. Around 80 percent of all customer contacts in retail happen in stores that politicians have previously classified as daily needs.

Signal policy as in ghost games in the Bundesliga

In addition, it is easier to comply with hygiene measures in large department or furniture stores than in discount stores. The effect of 2G will be minimal – with high damage to retail.
Ultimately, just like ghost games in the Bundesliga, the 2G regulation is about the signal: Look, we’re doing something! And it should make it clear to those who have not yet been vaccinated that they will lose freedom if they do not get vaccinated.

But all surveys and experience show that anti-vaccination campaigners are hardly impressed by it. In the end, the only thing that will help is the compulsory vaccination, symbol politics now only cause damage.
