Schröder is a professor of sociology at the University of Marburg. He summarized the most important conclusions of his satisfaction research in the book “When are we really satisfied?”, which was published as a paperback by Penguin in 2021.

Dusseldorf what makes me happy Even the question is wrong, says the sociologist Martin Schröder. “Happiness is an emotion, a state that comes and goes – and is therefore difficult to measure.” The much more important question is therefore: What makes me happy? Here people could give quite a good assessment.
Schröder has dealt intensively with this question – with a view to career, free time, life in general. And he found statistical answers to fundamental questions: What is most closely associated with satisfaction? Least what?
The sociologist used the Socio-Economic Panel as the data basis – an annual survey with a total of more than 80,000 participants that has been running since 1984. “The special thing is that it’s not always different people who are interviewed here, but always the same people – year after year, for almost 40 years,” he says. This allows more causal conclusions to be drawn.
