Zurich, Düsseldorf Given that Vulcan Energy has only been around for three years, the lithium start-up from Karlsruhe has already had quite a success story. LG Chem, one of the world’s largest manufacturers of lithium-ion batteries, is also in negotiations with the raw material novice, as is the French car manufacturer Renault.

Cathode world market leader Umicore has even signed the first purchase contract for the white gold from the Upper Rhine Rift. The start-up’s share price rose by over 60 percent in the past six months alone. Vulcan Energy has not even started the first drilling in the plateau between Frankfurt and Basel – let alone a permit.

The start-up promises a lot for this: one of the largest lithium deposits in Europe is located thousands of meters below the rock layers in the Upper Rhine Rift. Vulcan Energy wants to bring the coveted raw material to the surface not only in a climate-neutral way, but also in large quantities and at competitive prices.
