Berlin Russian spies are being expelled across Europe these days. Most recently, the federal government declared 40 Russian diplomats to be “undesirable persons”. The Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) announced on Monday evening that these embassy and consulate employees, “whom we assign to the Russian intelligence services”, must leave the Federal Republic within five days.

Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock (Greens) had previously announced that the decision had been made to “declare a significant number of members of the Russian embassy to be undesirable persons who have worked here in Germany every day against our freedom, against the cohesion of our society”. If diplomats are declared undesirable persons, this is tantamount to expulsion.

The work of the affected Russian diplomats “is a threat to those who seek protection from us,” Baerbock said in justification for the expulsion. “We will not tolerate this any longer. We informed the Russian ambassador this afternoon.”
